Five More Ways To Enjoy The Parks In Winter

Once the snow falls, there are many fabulous spots to explore on skis all over Vermont. Seyon Lodge has groomed trails in winter, and the Catamount Trail, an end-to-end cross-country ski trail, runs through portions of several parks including Coolidge and Smugglers’ Notch. In southern VT, a loop trail at Woodford State Park takes you around the Adams Reservoir, which sits on a plateau of the Green Mountains.

Have you ever heard about the Iditarod and thought to yourself, "that sounds like fun!"?Here’s your chance! There are several dogsled touring companies throughout Vermont, and October Siberians even offers a 2-hour tour around Little River State Park.

In winter, Lake Bomoseen & Lake Carmi are poplar ice fishing destinations… ice depending of course. Ice fishing clinics run by Vermont Fish& Wildlife department are held periodically throughout the winter at various locations, for those curious to learn more. Check their calendar for a scheduled events, and learn more about the sport of ice fishing on their website. 

Go on a First Day Hike on January 1st
Various locations around Vermont
This is an annual tradition for some folks. Start your new year off with a free, guided hike with other outdoor lovers. Hikes take place at various times throughout the day, and vary in length and difficulty. There is something for everyone!

Go Camping Off-Season

It’s always a treat for people to realize that their favorite park is open for camping in the off-season from November to April. It’s free when you fill out a permit atleast 3 days prior to your trip. There are no facilities, and everything is carry-in, carry-out, but if you are prepared, winter camping can be a great experience. Everything you need to know about off-season camping here.

Although it falls outside our regular park season, several Vermont State Parks will provide good viewing locations for solar eclipse on April 8. These parks include:   Bomoseen, Boulder Beach, Branbury, Crystal Lake, DAR, Elmore, Mt. Philo, Grand Isle, Knight Point, Lake Shaftsbury, Lake St. Catherine, Niquette Bay, Silver Lake, and Waterbury Center. July Flood 2024 State Parks Status Updates

Post last updated at 08/26/24 at 9:00 AM The only park affected by the flashing flooding on 7/30/24 was Brighton State Park. The park is fully reopened on Wednesday, August 7th. Roads were damaged in the park, locally in the town, as well as the nearby state highway. Park staff have contacted affected reservations.  All parks affected by the July 11 flood have reopened, although 3 parks still have reduced operations. This page will be regularly updated as more information is made available and road repairs are made. Swimwater results are current . Swim areas are posted when there is an increased risk of impaired water quality. For water monitoring results outside of Vermont State Park swimming areas, check out the Vermont Department of Health Cyanobacteria Tracker Map .
