Vermont State Parks

Looking for beautiful scenery, plenty of hiking, and a taste of Vermont’s history?  Coolidge State Park is the perfect spot for your next fall foliage escape. Coolidge State Park is located in Plymouth, Vermont and just a short drive away from Ludlow, Killington, Quechee, and Woodstock.

Nearly 80 years after young men from the CivilianConservation Corps (CCC) constructed what is now Coolidge State Park , a new group of young people from the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) is once again working at the park in Plymouth, VT. The eleven-member NCCC team, based out of the national service program’s Atlantic Region headquarters in Perry Point, MD, has constructed a 600-foot long fence along Coolidge State Park’s main road.  The fence will prevent traffic from entering recreational areas where children play. It is a continuation of an NCCC project from 2009, when the park’s visitor center was constructed with the help of a different NCCC team. The log-railed fence has been constructed much like the park’s iconic log lean-tos and picnic pavilion constructed by the CCC in the 1930s.  The NCCC team, Moose 2, spent three weeks peeling spruce bark by hand, and cutting and setting 20-foot segments of the fence. I have been living in Vermont State Parks for a week now and it has been awesome. I am taking pictures for Invasive Species Research and various other subjects for the state parks. Everyone who I have met working for the parks are very friendly. So far I have seen many chipmunks, red squirrels, newts, garter snakes, turtles and one skunk. My favorite campsite so far has been the Ash lean-to in Coolidge State Park. There you overlook the green mountains and it looks like they go on for an eternity. Branbury is a great park with the beautiful falls of Lana and crystal clear lake to lounge or swim in. I am really looking forward to the rest of the summer exploring new places and finding myself in various adventures for the rest of the summer. -Ellie

Bill and Janey Schreiber came to Coolidge in 2000. Bill became Park Ranger mid-season of 2000. Bill and Janey’s son, Pete Corradino was a naturalist for the State of Vermont and presented nature programs for campers at Jamaica State Park . He would also present programs at Coolidge when he had time. Bill and Janey envisioned CSP having it’s own nature center. Because the State of Vermont couldn’t give the park financial backing for such a project, Bill and Janey began fund raising to fulfill their vision. Unfortunately Janey passed away suddenly on December 27, 2005. Not wanting to let their dream slip away, Bill continues to work diligently towards the completion of the nature center. The nature center will be named the “Janey Schreiber Memorial Nature Center”.
