Vermont State Parks

Sound artist Craig Calorusso is bringing his latest musical performance project, Sun Boxes, into five state parks for five weekends this summer. It's comprised of twenty speakers spread over a large, open lawn operating independently, each powered by the sun via solar panels. Inside each Sun Box is a PC board that has a recorded musical programmed to play continuously in a loop. Because the loops are different in length, once the piece begins they continually overlap and the piece slowly evolves over time. Participants are encouraged to walk amongst the speakers, and surround themselves with the piece. Certain speakers will be closer and, therefore, louder, so the piece will sound different to different people in different positions throughout the array. Allowing the audience to move around will create a unique experience for everyone. In addition, as people wander through the speakers, they alter the composition. The Lois McClure Schooner The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (LCMM) is partnering with Vermont State Parks to host a music and food festival to benefit the Vermont Farm Disaster Relief Fund. Not only is there FREE admission into the park all day, but fun activities will be happening all day too, such as a farmer's market, performances, vendors from across the state will be selling local goods, and the regular activities that Kingsland Bay offers - hiking, picnicking, space for games, and more. To add to the special festivities, the LCMM is bringing along a historic ship. The Lois McClure Schooner will be docked on the shores of Kingsland Bay State Park for viewing all day, October 8th. Moscow, Vermont lays claim to the World's Shortest Forth of July Parade (Route). Not to be outdone, Smugglers' Notch State Park , Moscow's neighbors to the North, remains uncontested for the fifth year in a row for their self proclaimed title of the "World's Smallest Fourth of July Parade." Consisting of a single golf car affectionately named "Dora the Explorer" draped in flags and other patriotic finery that was largely donated by the community, enthusiastic park staff circle the park during the day sometimes drawing crowds numbering in the 10's of people! When asked about the rivalry Park Ranger Aaron Jacobs said "What?" Although Mr. Jacobs played coy it is rumored that all employees involved in the preparation and execution of this event take it very seriously, are sworn to secrecy and meet in a undisclosed portion of the park garage for preparation and planning. Frank Spaulding is the Projects Coordinator for Vermont State Parks . He oversees construction projects and is the go-to guy for stuff like wastewater systems, toilet building design, contract and bidding administration and ordering the parks' vehicles. He also takes the lead on hazard identification, aesthetic standards and has a lot to do with the captial budget. Perhaps not the most glamorous work, but vital to the safety and enjoyment of all state park visitors. Recently, our Commissioner, Jason Gibbs, put out a call to FPR (Forests, Parks & Recreation) staff soliciting ideas for funny radio ads for the parks. Frank is a funny guy (funny ha ha) and all three of his ideas were selected and produced into radio ads that will run this summer.
